1/22/2012 - Henry Carroll named SCTOBA Breeder of the Year
By Ben Baugh
CAMDEN -- The South Carolina Thoroughbred Owners' and Breeders' Association Awards dinner was held on Saturday evening at the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center in Camden.
Henry Carroll took home multiple honors during the evening, including the Othniel H. Wienges Award as the association's Breeder of the Year, and he was also selected as the winner of the Frank H. Whiteley Award for outstanding service. Carroll is renowned as the conditioner of 1997 Eclipse Award winning Sprinter Smoke Glacken and multiple Grade I winning millionaire turf specialist Yankee Affair. Carroll owns Lafayette Farm in St. Matthews.
Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day was the awards dinner's featured speaker. The four-time Eclipse Award winning jockey ministered to inmates at the Wateree Correctional Facility, home of the South Carolina Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation program, in Rembert on Friday.
The association takes great pride in the graduates who have either been bred or trained in South Carolina and is privileged to be able to honor those horsemen who have put forth great effort into achieving that success, said SCTOBA president Lee Christian.
"I think part of the importance of having somebody from the national scene (Pat Day) come to South Carolina is to make them aware that there are things going on in the Thoroughbred industry within the state," said Christian. "We keep telling people that, but it's great to hear from those individuals who are respected on the national level. We're very fortunate to have speakers like Pat Day."
The 2011 winners are: outstanding 2-year-old, Sabine Tully, breeder, Donald Baker; outstanding 3-year-old, I Suppose (dark bay gelding, Just A Mine - Golden Advantage by Tactical Advantage), breeder Hamilton Smith; outstanding co-older horse, Fancy Up (gray, 4-year-old filly, Smoke Glacken--Fancy Footwear by Olympio), breeder, Henry Carroll; Cat O'Nine Tails (four-year-old, bay filly, Prized - Early Cat by Afternoon Deelites), breeder, Laurence Stoney.
